5.3. Syllabus

The course, Origins and evolution of the French social historiography, will address the following topics:

Topic 1. The history of the French labour movement.

• 1. History as a weapon for political struggle.
• 2. The inclusion in the University curriculum.
• 3. Winds of change and renovation. The Algerian War. May of 1968 and its consequences.
• 4. The survival of the History of the Labour Movement. The historiography of Communism.
• 5. The open-mindedness. Labor History. "Histoire des femmes". Prosopography.

Topic 2. France (s) in the 21th century. Between History and Memory (I).

• 1. The realms of memory.
• 2. The emergence of memory themes. Memory conflicts.
• 3. Cross-cutting issues: the French Revolution, the Commune, the Affaire Dreyfus and Communism.
• 4. Exile and Migration.

Topic 3. France (s) in the 21th century. Between History and Memory (II).

• 1. The  Memory themes: the Great War, the Second World War (the Occupation, the Vichy regime and the Resistance), Slavery, Colonialism and the Algeria War.
• 2. Memory laws and collective response of historians.
• 3. The causes: individualism, globalization, society, and historiography.
